How to Break Into Healthcare Informatics

Have I piqued an interest in healthcare informatics? I will use the terminology of healthcare informatics and nursing informatics interchangeably. After hearing a talk from the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at the Cleveland Clinic this year, my sister is attending the University of Illinois with the intention of graduating with a healthcare informatics certificate. My cousin called me two weeks ago asking about information on how to break into the healthcare informatics career. My cousin has a bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration and currently works in the finance department at the second largest medical center in Baltimore, Maryland. Here was my advice to her:

  1. Research, research, and research. Research the different job descriptions, research who is hiring, research healthcare informatics schools, research grants, etc.
  2. Ask yourself why you want to break into this field. Sometimes money isn’t enough. Is it wanting to make a difference in someone’s life? Do you have a passion for technology? Is it job security? I watched a nursing informatics webinar last week and the speaker shared that 50,000 people pharmacy in canada will be needed to implement an electronic health record (EHR) by 2016. For those individuals in the field of healthcare informatics already, that is job security.
  3. Do you know someone in the field of healthcare informatics? Can you do a share day with the person and observe their job viagra for a few hours? Sometimes, job descriptions can be vague. Ask questions if you don’t understand.
  4. Enroll in a healthcare informatics program – either online or in person.
  5. Get a job in healthcare informatics to see if you really like it. I know it is easier said than done. My cousin asked me how she would get a job in a career she doesn’t even know about.   6. Join a professional organization like Health Information Management (HIMSS) or American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA).
  7. Subscribe to professional journals like Healthcare Informatics.

  9. Attend conferences. Most conferences are available to individuals who join a professional organization but sometimes there are conferences that are open to the public.
