Ask Anna: Q & A

I appreciate the emails I have been receiving from my readers. I may not answer my emails right away but I will eventually answer. I appreciate my readers patience. I want to post the questions my readers are asking me because it may be questions that other readers may be asking but are either too afraid to ask or are too busy to write to me. I feel there is a pattern in the questions that I am receiving.

Questions and Answers

1.)  Is Cisco certification such as CCNA necessary in the field of Healthcare Informatics?

While Cisco certification is not necessary to be hired, it isn’t bad to have if you have it already. I wouldn’t go out and get certified unless you want to do something technical. The certifications that are nice to have but not required are CPHIMS  (Certified Professional Healthcare Information and Management Systems) from Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) or the board certification in informatics (RN-BC), if you are a nurse.

2.)  Is getting a Master’s degree in Healthcare Informatics, Medical Informatics, Nursing Informatics, Biomedical Informatics or Bioinformatics pertinent in the field of healthcare informatics?

It is not necessary to have a degree in either Bioinformatics, Healthcare, Medical,  or Nursing Informatics, in order to break into the field as a systems analyst.  It is necessary to have an advanced degree if you would like to be a manager or above in healthcare informatics.  Many employers prefer that you have experience in an EMR  before any type of advanced degree.

3.)  How is the job market in this field?

This is the best time to be entering healthcare informatics especially since Meaningful use is in full swing. Many hospitals are looking for system analysts in order to qualify for meaningful use.

4.)  How do I find a job in healthcare informatics?

When I entered into the field of informatics I had a hard time finding a job too. I suggest joining HIMSS or ANIA-CARING where they have a job bank for members. In addition, to joining professional organizations, networking and attending conferences are key factors. The people you meet in these conferences may be recruiters, principal consultants or vice presidents of hospitals, vendors, or corporations.

5.)  What is the salary range for health informaticists?

The salary depends on the area of the United States.  In 2011, HIMSS published a survey on nurse informaticists’ salaries and the average salary was $98, 702.  Salaries for each hospital are dependent if you report to the nursing department or Information Technology department.  In addition, salaries are variable to your job title.  If you would like more information about the HIMSS survey, please feel free to contact me and I can email you the survey findings.

These were the top questions I had. I hoped I answered your questions. If not, please feel free to email me any questions that you may have.

191 Days Before Go-Live

Just a recap – my institution is going live with a new electronic medical record (EMR) in December and I decided to write about my experience with a countdown to the final days. My first countdown post can be found here. It’s 191 days before go-live. Uh-oh. We have less than 200 days to make this the best EMR this particular hospital has ever seen. I haven’t posted a go-live update in awhile because of the stress I endured and very nervous about my own work I wasn’t sure I would have completed. We have had several deadlines and have built the system as much as we can. There were several things going on at the same time: environment migration, unit testing, and the CPM user launch to name a few. There are always many items we are all juggling at the same time. Multitasking is a requirement for this job. All of the teams have finally migrated from one environment to another and all of our build is in our testing environment. But, all of the analysts needs to check to see if their build was moved and if not, must be manually built in order to test. Unit testing has commenced and integrated testing will start in a few weeks. We also had our user Clinical Practice Model (CPM) user launch this past week and was well received. Our clinicians were excited and anxious at the same time. They had many questions for us. This computer system is

different from what they are used to and has more functionality than the current computer system. In a few weeks, we will begin our care plan training, patient education teaching in July, and professional exchange hand-off in August. All at the same time as integrated testing and content building. Things are getting quite hectic since our go-live date is in 7 short months. Time is coming near and I can see people are on edge and are getting exhausted. I think its easier for a hospital to go from paper to electronic rather than electronic to electronic. The end users at this hospital are savvy end users and expect the same functionality or more in the new system. These are a few examples of how stressful a go-live can be. I can’t say that an inpatient implementation is stress-free and there are issues and problems along the way. Of course there are always going to be lessons learned. I don’tstress about the things I don’t have control over. Happy Memorial Day!

Engaging, Transforming, and Empowering Nurses

I attended a nursing conference this past weekend called “Engaging, Transforming, and Empowering Nurses through Clinical Practice, Education, Research and Information Technology.  I wrote about the conference last week and I attended. I am glad I was able to attend and learned a lot!  There was a lot of information and I will outline the conference in another blog post. I wanted to highlight one of the speakers, Tatiana Arreglado,  since she is a nurse informaticist from Mount Sinai.

In Tatiana’s  presentation, she spoke about patient centered care and the interdisciplinary team, how the electronic medical record practices safe medicine with legible handwriting and clinicians being able to view patient’s chart from the doctor’s office to the hospital.  Clinicians can also view the patient’s record in another state if that facility has the same medical software.   In addition, Ms. Arreglado spoke about Accountable Care Organizations (ACO).  Accountable care organizations are an interdisciplinary team of healthcare providers and hospitals that coordinate care, avoid duplication of services. cost effective and better quality of care. ACO’s  offer a new approach to healthcare delivery and are designed to provide consistently high-quality care to a specific population of patients while controlling costs.  ACO are a result of the new healthcare law:  the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.

This is the first time I have heard of Accountable Care Organizations and would like to research it more.  I’d like to leave you a video on the Future of Healthcare by Barry Bittman that explains the true reality.

Happy Nursing Informatics Day

This week is National nurse’s week from May 6-12.  May 12 is Ms. Florence Nightingale’s  birthday. It’d been 102 years since her death, but her spirit still lives among us.  Without Florence, the nursing profession will be non-existent. We thank you Florence for your vision on the art and science of nursing care.

May 12 is also Nursing Informatics Day. I’d like to take this time to thank all of the nurse informaticists  and the pioneers of nursing informatics.  Thank you for your contribution on the nursing specialty of informatics. Without your work, the nursing informatics community will not exist. I’d like to say the some of the  nursing pioneers  mentioned below were once my professors at the University of Maryland and some were authors whose research or books I read while I was in school.

Have a great week and keep up the good work! Nurses’ week ends on Florence Nightingale’s birthday on May 12 – also Nursing Informatics Day.

Trivia on Nurse’s week: The first call for national nurse recognition occurred in 1953. Dorothy Sutherland of the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to declare a day in October, “Nurse Day”. A “nurse
