278 Days Til Go-Live

The project team finished another week of workflow sessions.  We have been working very hard to get all of the workflow sessions ready.  After the workflow sessions, focus groups are the next on the agenda for each department to take a close look at what we build for them, especially the clinical documentation.

My focus group is this week and I am only 65% ready to show my clients what I have built for them.  My group had their workflow session last week and seemed pleased with what they saw. Granted, they have not had training yet and not yet touched the system, so I am sure they will have more to say in the future.

This week my colleagues and I are preparing for next week’s workflow session.  After next week’s workflow session, we only have one more workflow session week.

It’s almost March and into the third month of the year.  We really only have 9 months til the medical center turns on the new software system.

Pressure is rising as we get closer to go live and the deadline dates become real close.  In one of my meeting today, the director gave us some milestone dates to shoot for. The dates that she would like us to get our test users ready is by April and then we start writing our test scripts.  Yikes! We only have one month to do all of that.

We start testing the software in the spring and still have many things to build. The entire team has been working very hard and working long hours.  The team’s spirit is still high and everyone is working together.

I had felt pressures of the deadline a few weeks ago but last week, I calmed down. I had to focus and relax and realized I can only do so much.  Before I went to work, I attended yoga class to focus on my breathing and myself. When I am stressed my body tenses up and my muscles become knots and my thinking gets less focused.  I need to think straight. I need to take care of myself and my job gets stressful. I don’t want to burn myself out.  Believe me, implementing an inpatient software is as stressful as working in the Intensive Care Unit.

I love the implementation phase of the system life cycle. I think its the most exciting phase of the system life cycle and I have had experience with all phases of the life cycle.  Even though, my job is stressful, its also exciting and I never do the same thing twice.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Health Informatics

I received an email from my ANIA-CARING listserv seeking for someone to fill this postdoctoral opportunity in South Africa.  I love sharing information so I thought I would post it on this blog in case one of my readers may be interested or may know someone.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Health Informatics
Institute for ICT Advancement, School of ICT, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Africa

Position:
An important reason for the failure of Health Information Technology (HIT) solutions is that the original design does not reflect the work practices and social relations amongst its
users. This also leads to low utilization levels of ‘‘successful’’ HITs, which means that the
solution is not utilized meaningfully. This has been shown to be inherent to the complex
nature of the healthcare environment.  This fellowship is focused on improving adoption and meaningful use of Health Information Technology (HIT) solutions, with special emphasis on Home-Based Healthcare (HBHC).
Candidates with an information technology background, but strong interest / experience in
health informatics are encouraged to apply. Candidates with a nursing background (or
other relevant), but a strong interest in HITs, can also apply.

Research:
The research will be conducted together with students in the Health Informatics research
group within the School of ICT (www.nmmu.ac.za/sict).
The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to contribute significantly to:
     a.  The publication of research outputs from current and previous projects
     b.  Daily supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate student projects
     c.  Strengthening of collaboration with partners (eg healthcare providers); and
     d.  Conducting and leading fieldwork at a local NGO (specifically in the HBHC context).

Requirements:
A Ph.D. Information Technology / Nursing Informatics / Medical Informatics or other
relevant field, obtained within the past five years, with a strong background and/or interest
in health information technologies (HITs).

Applications:
A covering letter and curriculum vitae, including all research outputs and experience
should be sent to Prof Dalenca Pottas in electronic format at e-mail:
[email protected].

Ready to Become a Nurse Informaticist

I appreciate all of the questions I am getting from my readers.  One reader specifically asked me how to find a job in informatics.  She is currently a nursing informatics student.  Unlike a nurse, there is no “typical” job a nurse informaticist can have.  There are a wide variety of positions that a nurse informaticist can hold.  Nurse informaticists can hold executive positions such as Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to software application trainers.  I wrote about how I transitioned from bedside nursing to a nurse informaticist.

Finding a job as a nurse informaticist is a lot easier now than it was 10 years ago when I first started out in the field.  It’s because many hospitals want to qualify for meaningful use of the electronic medical record and are hiring as many people as they can to convert from paper to electronic.

Although I can give tips and advice to how to get into the nurse or healthcare informatics field, I cannot help you actually get a position.  Before you quit your present job as a clinician, ask yourself these five questions:

1.)  Why do you want to leave your current position?

2.)   Do you want to leave your current position for more money?

3.)  Are you ready to give up patient care?

4.)   Are you ready for a different type of stress?

5.)  Is your mind open to learn new information and technology?

Answer these questions honestly and see if you still want to move from your current position to information technology.  I’ve seen nurses who thought they were ready to transition from the clinical side to the corporate side and failed.

Everyone have different experiences as a nurse informaticist and transitioning from bedside to the administrative side.  I can only write from my own experiences from my previous positions.  I have held positions such as trainer analyst, nurse informaticist, healthcare consultant, Apache coordinator, and clinical analyst.

I personally had an easy transition as a clinical nurse to a nurse informaticist because I was ready for the change.  In addition, I had the passion for technology and for helping patients in a different way.  I didn’t make the career change because I wanted more money.   I had the opposite effect.  But because I had the passion, I didn’t care.

You may be wondering what the salary of a nurse informaticist is.  According to a 2011 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) survey, the average nurse informaticist salary in the country was $98, 702.  The salary has increased in recent years as many healthcare systems are recognizing the value for nurse informaticists.  In 2007, the average salary was $83, 675.  In 2004, the average salary was $69, 500.   The regions with the highest salaries are in the New England ( $123, 611) and Pacific ($116, 716 )areas.  It was also reported that nurses with advance degrees and certifications (ANIA or HIMSS) made more money than their counterparts who did not have a degree or certifications. It obviously pays to enroll in an advanced degree program and to get certified in nursing informatics.
